FREAKERS
Fleckney
Darts Team
While the Fleckney league was gaining momentum with new teams from the surrounding villages the Freakers darts team was born in 1967 at the Dun Cow Fleckney, run by Dick ILiff and his wife at that time.  The Dun Cow is now know as The Golden Sheild (other licensees 1789-2002). The Freakers team thrived and within 5 years moved on to the Fleckney working mens club then on to a new home at The Old Crown. In 1975 an injection of young blood (dart players? DRINKERS!!),  the infamous Freakers red and yellow trade mark tank tops made by Fred Samson and the players vocal anthems created by original Freaker, Harry Harrison see ( songs page ), all helped to  keep the team going well into the late 80s early 90's. Then the freakers moved home again back to the F.W.M.C. to finish their league presence in 1998. Although the majority of the pubs from the surrounding villages are still standing,  many have become family pubs with restaurants, only half of them still have a dart board, this has been a major factor in the decline of this great social indoor sport within village communities. Countesthorpe a local village that used to play in the Fleckney leauge still has a thriving leauge of their own. After a 'few' beers and alot of reminiscing the days (or nights) gone by are always seen through rose tinted glasses (or the bottom of a pint glass if you're a Freaker!).
The beer was cheaper, you could smoke in the pub and the Freakers won every match!  Well I did say rose tinted glasses!
The Freakers may not have won every match but they had a great time trying.  Proudly wearing their Freakers tops and singing the Freakers anthems.
Time to create a web-site so the memories can be shared by all for ever more
So read/browse on and enjoy a trip down the Fleckney Freakers memory lane.........................
